Master of Minds ...

As i mentioned in a previous post i am not the speediest painter, so it has taken me all this time to finish my second 15mm sci fi miniature (not helped by interference from work, parenthood, illness etc.)

The second miniature i completed was also from 15mm.co.uk & their excellent SHM sic fi range - like "The Controller" i finished previously, this model was a must have from day one & with so many gaming possibilities a great addition to any collection.

The colour scheme i chose for my collective mind monster was very similar to the one on the example model, i liked the finish & thought why change if it works.

The only twist i added on my model that i knew i wanted as soon as i saw it was i gloss varnished the huge brain in the centre - unfortunately this is not showcased very well in the photograph as the light i used was pretty direct & has caused the matt varnish on the un-textured base segments to reflect this back. under natural light the effect is great giving the brain a fresh "pulsating" look which was one of the appeals of the model in the first place.

The range of unusual characters in the SHM range are really great for firing the imagination & i look forward to painting more of these strange aline creatures in the future.

Terraforming ...

I am not the speediest painter so when i do paint i tend to focus on a few things at once to keep my motivation up. Terrain is a great thing to do this with as not only does it provide usable kit to game with but also provides a break from painting fine details.

A project i started recently alongside my 15mm models is some small scatter pieces using a bunch of plastic GW trees that came extra in a larger eBay auction.

I started out with a sack of Citadel Jungle trees, not amazing in their standard form but worth a look for the wider projects they can be applied to.

I glued some small clumps to some old 28mm bases i had lying around & used clean cat litter to cover the slot where a model is usually fixed.

I then used PVA glue to texture the remainder of the base with fine sand to match the bases of my other models.

I have six of these smaller pieces made up & in the process of basing, i have plenty more of the plastic trees so if these turn out well may attempt some larger clusters at a later date.

I always enjoy reusing things for other projects so my scrap part & old base trees should provide some useful small cover when finished at minimal expense.

Small Beginnings ...

Some of the first miniatures i came across when looking into 15mm Sci Fi were the excellent SHM Sci Fi range from 15mm.co.uk, these miniatures are a fantastic assortment of rogues, aliens & monsters which really peaked my interest in the 15mm world in the first place.

The one character i had to purchase & paint first was SHM22 "The Controller" who appealed to my love of The Mekon from classic British Sci Fi comic "Dan Dare" which i enjoyed as a child.

I was really proud that my first completed 15mm miniature was featured HERE on 15mm.co.uk's own blog in a piece showcasing the character that had pulled me in to the smaller side of the hobby alongside some other great painted examples.

I have since purchased a lot more of the SHM range & am really looking forward to getting them painted up & putting them through their paces in my own space adventures !

Starting Out ...

Hello & welcome to my new Blog !

Starting up a blog is an idea i have been toying with for a while now, but gathering the courage & motivation to actually start is something that has always held me back ... until recently.

Having been a 28mm modeller, painter & collector since the mid 80's, over the past few years i had entered a hobby slump with none of the main systems grabbing my interest until i discovered the world of 15mm.

The world of 15mm cured my hobby slump & has reignited my passion for modelling & painting & even gaming (which i have not engaged in for a long time), hopefully in this blog inspired by others in the 15mm community i can share my ideas & projects with like minded folk who enjoy all that 15mm has to offer.

Any comments or advice on how to develop my fledgling blog or on content i post are greatly welcomed & i look forward to sharing more of my projects soon.

Thanks for looking.

Neal.
